Not just the melanin factor
Saturday, November 08, 2008
Dear Editor,
I wish to register my congratulations to the senator who is now set to be
inaugurated as President Barack Hussein Obama, a mixed-race black man with theaudacity of hope, whom God has allowed as a divine choice in the race to becomethe commander-in-chief of America for reasons especially known to the Godhead.
“For those who doubt our abilities and possibilities, the Barack Obama story
reminds us that anyone can achieve anything with the right guidance, a good
education, a positive attitude and a moral compass,” wrote Jean Lowrie-Chin in her
column on Monday, reminding us that “we may lionise but be careful not to idolise
(even if his infomercial surpassed the ratings for the finals of American Idol)”.
Now we will have to wait and see to what extent the world will appreciate the
policies of Obama. I think the younger generation of Americans in particular are
aware that the enemies of the USA are more likely to appreciate a more diplomatic
president than George Bush. Terrorist fighting is inevitable, but Obama proposes a
better way. Isn’t this one of the major reasons why the world prefers Obama?
Who ultimately allowed Obama to win? The first two verses of the book of Daniel
remind us that God is in ultimate control, for there it shows us that “the Lord
gave Jehoiakim king of Judah” into the dominion of Nebuchadnezzar, king of
Babylon. Hopefully, the young policy-conscious voting generation will also be
exposed to the prophecy-conscious among them so that they may know that
Nebuchadnezzar was more than the name of some spaceship in The Matrix.
They will know, in real terms, that Nebuchadnezzar was an icon minted on one side
of an Iraqi coin by Saddam Hussein, that Babylon was located 54 miles south of
what is present-day Baghdad, that no matter how hard Saddam dreamed to rebuild the
ruins of Babylon contrary to the Bible’s promise, it will never be rebuilt.
This policy- and prophecy-conscious generation will know that it is God who
changes the times and the seasons, God who removes kings and sets up kings, God
who knows “what is in the darkness and the light dwells with him” (see Daniel2:20-
22 ). When the final recount is done, it will be known that God has allowed Obama
to be president, with more than melanin percentage as a factor, because “promotion
comes neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south, but from God
who is the judge. He puts down one, and sets up another” (Psalm75:6-7).
